Commerce department order banning transactions with the app was to take effect on Thursday

The US justice department said it had appealed against a judge’s order that blocked the government from imposing restrictions on Chinese-owned TikTok that were set to take effect on Thursday.

The commerce department’s August restrictions order was to take effect late in the day, barring transactions with the video sharing app that its Chinese owner, ByteDance, had warned would have effectively barred its use in the United States.

President-elect Joe Biden says Donald Trump's refusal to concede the presidential election is 'an embarrassment'. Biden was outlining plans for the transition period before he takes office in January 2020 when he was asked what he would say to Americans anxious over Trump's refusal to concede and what it would mean for the country. "Well, I just think it's an embarrassment, quite frankly," Biden said. "I think it will not help the president's legacy." Biden has promised to "get right to work" despite alarm over whether there would be a smooth transition of power

Rightwing news outlets have taken up the president’s message on social media, stirring supporters into a frenzy

The networks have made their calls, world leaders have begun paying their respects, and even Fox News and Rupert Murdoch’s other media outlets appear to have given up the ghost on a second term for Donald Trump. But in a video posted on Facebook on 7 November and viewed more than 16.5m times since, NewsMax host and former Trump administration official Carl Higbie spends three minutes spewing a laundry list of false and debunked claims casting doubt on the outcome of the presidential election.

“I believe it’s time to hold the line,” said Higbie, who resigned from his government post over an extensive track record of racist, homophobic and bigoted remarks, to the Trump faithful. “I’m highly skeptical and you should be too.”

  • Winner leads from start to finish under John Velazquez
  • Aidan O’Brien saddles first three in Breeders’ Cup Mile

British and Irish stables enjoyed one of their best ever days at the Breeders’ Cup meeting on Saturday as Aidan O’Brien sent out an unprecedented 1-2-3 in the Breeders’ Cup Mile after earlier wins for Kevin Ryan’s Glass Slippers and James Fanshawe’s Audarya in the Turf Sprint and Filly & Mare Turf respectively. A clean sweep of the day’s events on grass was complete when Dermot Weld’s Tarnawa landed the Turf.

Then Authentic, the Kentucky Derby winner, brought down the curtain on the meeting with an authoritative success in the Classic under a copybook frontrunning ride by John Velazquez. The 4-1 chance was Bob Baffert’s fourth winner of the race in the last seven years.

Two men, who lacked permits to carry their weapons in Pennsylvania, traveled from Virginia in Hummer with QAnon sticker

Two men armed with handguns were arrested on Thursday near the convention center in Philadelphia where the continuing vote count could decide the presidential election, police said.

The men, ages 42 and 61, traveled to the city from the Virginia Beach, Virginia, area in a Hummer and did not have permits to carry the weapons in Pennsylvania, police said. The Hummer was adorned with an American flag and a window sticker for the antisemitic, pro-Trump conspiracy theory QAnon.

For the second year running, the European challenge on the first day of the Breeders’ Cup came up short on Friday, as second-place finishes for Aidan O’Brien’s Battleground and Mother Earth were the best that a strong list of contenders could muster.

Battleground finished strongly from well off the pace but was still three lengths adrift of Mike Maker’s Fire At Will in the Juvenile Turf, while Jessica Harrington’s Cadillac finished fourth in the same race.

Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe highlights systemic flaws and president’s bid to ‘undermine public trust’

An international observer mission has reported that the US elections have been “tarnished” by legal uncertainty and Donald Trump’s “unprecedented attempts to undermine public trust”.

A preliminary report by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) pointed to systemic weaknesses in US elections, as well as the stress imposed by the coronavirus pandemic and Trump’s calls for an end to vote counting in certain states based on false claims of fraud.

Republicans and Democrats have a chance to gerrymander states in a way that will define the next decade

While the race for the White House is sorted out across tight midwestern battlegrounds, Republicans can already claim an important victory further down the ballot. The GOP held state House and Senate chambers across Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Kansas, and many other key states. This ensures a dramatic edge when it comes to redrawing new state legislative and congressional maps next year, following the completion of the census count.

This year, Democrats had hoped to avenge the GOP’s 2010 Redmap strategy, which drove Republicans that year to control swing-state legislatures in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Florida, and majorities they have not relinquished since. That also allowed Republicans to draw, on their own, nearly five times as many congressional districts nationwide as Democrats.

The first Americans to cast a vote for president – but whose votes don’t count – have registered a solid win for Joe Biden, by 55% to 42% for Donald Trump.

Residents of the island of Guam are some of the 4 million US citizens who are disenfranchised because they live in a territory, not in a state. The issue is one of acute sensitivity in Guam, as in other territories such as American Samoa, Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands.

A political analysis report says that Democrats expect to gain between 10 and 15 seats in the 435-member House

Democrats are expected to expand their majority in the House of Representatives by winning several election races on Tuesday night, an expansion that would build on Democrats’ impressive wins in the 2018 midterm elections, when they gained 41 House seats.

The Cook Political Report, which provides non-partisan election and political analysis, predicted on Monday that Democrats will gain between 10 and 15 seats in the House, which has 435 members. “A combination of President Trump’s unpopularity in the suburbs, a fundraising disadvantage, and 32 open seats for the GOP to defend (to Democrats’ dozen) has weighed down Republicans’ prospects,” said David Wasserman, of Cook Political Report.

A deadline extended by the state supreme court stands, but may still be considered by the supreme court after the election

The US supreme court has rejected a last-minute plea from Pennsylvania Republicans to overturn a three-day extension of the absentee ballot deadline, a hugely consequential ruling in one of the most closely-watched swing states in the presidential election.

Pennsylvania usually requires ballots to arrive by 8pm on election night in order to count. But last month, the Pennsylvania supreme court extended that deadline by three days for ballots postmarked by election day, a move likely to allow thousands of late-arriving ballots to count.
