Box-office tracking service comScore has released the results of the year in movie box-office with the industry generating a record $39.92 billion worldwide in 2017, jumping 3% on last year.
The gain came despite a 2.3% slide in US box office to a total of $11.12 billion. International receipts jumped 5% to $28.8 billion and not only covered the shortfall but helped surge the overall tally to a new high.
The improvement was due to a variety of strong performances, notably the Chinese blockbuster “Wolf Warrior 2” which has grossed $870 million along with all the various major U.S. releases like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Despicable Me 3,” “The Fate of the Furious” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” which all took in over a billion each.
“Wonder Woman,” “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” each took in more than $800 million on a worldwide basis.
