Following a disastrous “60 Minutes” interview in which Education Secretary Betsy DeVos struggled to answer basic questions, “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah believes she “has a lot of learning to do.”
“President Trump’s housing secretary doesn’t know anything about housing, his environmental chief doesn’t think manmade climate change is a thing, and last night we learned that his secretary of education has a lot of learning to do,” Noah said on Monday night.
The comments came after DeVos was widely criticized for the interview, during which she said she has not “intentionally visited schools that are underperforming.”
“You know the fact that she never ‘intentionally’ went to a bad school means she definitely walked into one by accident,” Noah joked. “I do feel bad for the next school she visits now, because they’ll definitely know why she’s there.”
Meanwhile, “The Opposition” host Jordan Klepper also slammed the interview, but his sights were on the mainstream media, because he was “disgusted” that they would try to tear DeVos down.
Klepper rolled clips of media figures who criticized her, and he brushed them off.
“She got some bad reviews, whatever,” Klepper said. “Just like my all male rebuttal to the ‘Vagina Monologues.'”
He added, “People can be mean; you move on.”
But what really left Klepper angered was “this gotcha journalism that ’60 Minutes’ employs.”
“If you’re not familiar, ‘60 Minutes’ is a hidden-camera prank show where Lesley Stahl — their Ashton Kutcher — ambushes unsuspecting interviewees with a series of meticulously researched questions.”
Klepper defended DeVos, who said she was “misunderstood” in the interview, and the late-night host compared it to Dave Matthews lyrics, or “anything Matt Damon says about women.”
“There are powerful forces out there working against DeVos,” Klepper said. “Like the results of things she’s done in the past.”
