• Nicolás Tagliafico’s ‘goal’ disallowed in first half
With a little help from the video assistant referee the defending champions, Real Madrid, overcame a spirited Ajax to take a big step towards the quarter-finals.
The substitute Marco Asensio scored a late winner to put Madrid in a strong position going into the second leg on 5 March but it was the historic decision by the VAR to disallow Nicolás Tagliafico’s header in the first half that was the talking point at the Johan Cruyff Arena as officials ruled Dusan Tadic was in an offside position and standing in front of Real’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, as the ball looped in.
