Double Oscar-winning actress turned filmmaker Jodie Foster has revealed in a new interview that she believes the current push for big budget tentpole films above all else is ruining the future of Hollywood.
Speaking with Radio Times magazine (via The Telegraph), she took aim at studios who are now more focused on mass appeal to get bums in seats at the cost of offering something of quality:
“Going to the movies has become like a theme park. Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking – you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth. It’s ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world. I don’t want to make $200 million movies about superheroes.”
Would she ever consider making a film about a superhero? She revealed she would consider it only if they had ‘really complex psychology’. Foster recently directed an episode of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian tech drama “Black Mirror” on Netflix.
